Spring Is Here: Three Tips For A Gorgeous Green Lawn

Spring is here! It’s time to say goodbye to snow and ice and welcome your lawn back from its winter slumber. But what exactly does that mean? The cool season grasses native to Southeast Michigan require a bit more love after all those winter freezes. Now's the time to prepare lawns for Spring, so they can grow strong and healthy before summer arrives. Let's look at three steps you can take right now to help give your turf  healthy, weed-free start this Spring.

1. Deep Water Your Grass

Even though there's been snow and ice in Southeast Michigan, your lawn still needs plenty of water to wake up! Deep watering encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil, fortifying it against drought or summer stresses. This means watering your lawn for about forty minutes so that water has enough time to soak down six to eight inches to reach the root systems. Visionary Fertilization recommends deep watering only one to two times a week, depending on the weather and current soil conditions to help prevent damage from overwatering.

2. Show Some Love To Your Soil

In April, cool season grasses are just starting to come out of hibernation and are ready to eat. Feeding the right
fertilizer helps give grass the famous Spring green, encourages growth, and aids in winter damage recovery. Southeast Michigan lawns need fertilizers with the right blend of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen helps bring out the green color and triggers the growth cycle on established lawns, while phosphorus and potassium feed root systems. You can also add organic matter like compost, grass clippings, or other organic materials. Together with a balanced fertilizer, organic matter improves soil structure and water retention and helps it resist pests and disease.

3. Stop Weeds Before They Grow

Spring is also the perfect time to get a jumpstart on weed control. Weeds like dandelions and crabgrass can quickly take over your lawn if left unchecked. One option is to pull them by hand— but be sure to remove the entire root system, or they'll grow back. Visionary Fertilization has perfected Spring weed control. As part of Visionary's 7-Step Treatment Program, a pre-emergent crabgrass control is applied to stop weeds from germinating. Our lawn care experts then come back with a liquid weed killer to keep your yard weed-free throughout Spring!

Know Before You Mow

It's been a while since the blades have touched the grass. You may want to check or change the oil, replace the oil and air filters (based on the model you have), and thoroughly clean the blades. This helps keep any residual fungus from transferring to the new grass. Secondly, Spring is a great time to
sharpen the lawn mower blades. Sharper blades create clean cuts, reducing the entry area for disease and giving your lawn a clean look.
